The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 which seeks to amend the 1995 Waqf Act has been referred to a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) after facing strong objections from the Opposition parties. In Islamic law, waqf refers to property (movable or immovable) dedicated in the name of God for religious and charitable purposes. Key highlight of the Bill - The Bill proposes the inclusion of two Muslim women and two non-Muslim members on a Waqf Board, and inserts a new Section to prevent the wrongful declaration of a property as “Waqf”. - It introduces the District Collector as an arbiter to decide if a property is a Waqf or government land. - It also removes the finality of decisions made by waqf tribunals, allowing aggrieved parties to appeal directly to the concerned High Court. Criticism - There are concerns that the bill aims to deprive the Muslim community of their land, assets and the “freedom to manage religious affairs” guaranteed under Article 26 of the Indian Constitution. #waqfbill #parliamentsession #amitshah #akhileshyadav #budgetsession #englishnews #latestnews #topnews #breakingnews #currentaffairs #nextias Keep Learning! ‪@nextias‬
