STORYLINE:
British forces handed over the command for the Mazar-e-Sharif Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) to incoming Swedish forces on Thursday.
The transition is part of a wider scheme in the Mazar-e-Sharif area this week as Colonel Mike McMahan, the British commander, explained:
"Britain has handed over the PRT to the Swedish, the Quick Reaction Force to the Norwegians and indeed the Forward Support Base, to the Germans," he said.
The ceremony was held at Camp Northern Lights, the new base for the Mazar-e-Sharif  PRT.
One further change involves the German-led Regional Area Coordinator (RAC) North, who will move to a new location at Mazar-e-Sharif.
The participating countries expect the move to enhance their strategic ability, as the RAC N will now be based alongside the Forward Support Base (FSB) and the Quick Reaction Force (QRF) in a separate compound in Mazar-e-Sharif.
The process of planning these changes in the North has been conducted over several months to enable the International Security and Assistance Force (ISAF) to provide a seamless transition from the old command to the new.
Sweden now has approximately 250 troops based in Afghanistan, the majority of which are based in the Mazar-e-Sharif PRT. Further troops are stationed with the the RAC N, the Mazar-e-Sharif FSB and in Kabul.
British forces are now focusing their attention on the south of the country. An initial force of approximately 1,000 troops has already been deployed to Kandahar and Helmand provinces.
The advance party of engineers and marine commandos is constructing a base for more than 3,000 British troops to be deployed this summer in Laskhar Gar, capital of Helmand province. The area is hostile with a Taliban presence and is a centre of the opium poppy trade.
