Why are there Christians in India?

India is often thought of as a predominantly Hindu country. When the British Raj gained its independence in 1947, it was divided into two countries: majority Muslim Pakistan, and majority Hindu India. However, India is not as religiously homogeneous as you might think. Centuries before Islam was first introduced to the subcontinent, Christianity had already established its presence. Today, India is the home of nearly 30 million Christians, forming a small but influential community in India. The fact that Christianity has continued to survive for so long in a country predominantly adhering to Hinduism sparks the question: Why are there Christians in India?
