In this video, we will show you how to do division in excel, using a formula.

You can automate any type of calculation in excel and for beginner users we will take you through different steps and examples of how you can divide values in different cells.

Over here we have a simple sales forecast sheet, which covers sales for two different products, over a period of 12 months. Now let’s say we want to calculate the average sales per month. For that, we would need to divide total sales for the year, which you can find in this cell, and divide it by the total duration, which is over here.

I.
➡️All formulas in excel start with an “equals to” sign. Let’s select the cell where we want the result to appear, and press the “equals to” key on the keyboard.
➡️ Now all you have to do is select the numerator first, which in this case would be total sales for the year. So, let’s move the cursor and click on the cell over here. You can see that excel has automatically added the cell in the formula.
➡️ To make a division in excel, you have to use the “forward slash” key on the keyboard.
➡️ Next, we need to select the denominator, which in this case would be the total duration. So, let’s click on the cell containing the total number of months.
➡️ Once you hit enter, excel will automatically divide the total sales for the year with the duration and give you the result.

II.
➡️ Now instead of selecting the cells, you can even type the cell number in the formula. So for example, over here, after the equals to sign, we can simply type in “O” which is the column, and “7” which is the row number, and you can see that excel has selected the cell. Its just another way of doing the calculation, produces the same result.

That’s all!
