The effect of estrogen on the brain

Kejal Kantarci, MD from the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN provides an overview of her work on the effect of menopause hormone therapies on brain structure at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) 2017, London, UK. Dr Kantarci looked at women who were undergoing menopause and involved them in a trial to see the effect of two different hormone therapies - oral conjugated equine estrogens and 17β estradiol. She followed these women over time with MRI and cognitive testing. Interestingly Dr Kantarci found that the estradiol group had lower amyloid levels and structural brain changes overtime.
