The Animas River is a
The Animas River is a big, western river in the San Juan Mountains. The train followed it for most of the journey between Silverton and Durango, crossing it many times throughout the trip. It was a warm, sunny day, a perfect day for riding in an open railcar. The passing scenery was magnificent and I hope I captured a bit of it in the video.
The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad operates 45 miles of track between Durango and Silverton, Colorado. The route was originally opened to transport silver and gold ore mined from the San Juan mountains, and it has run continuously since 1881, although it is now a tourist line hauling passengers. It is one of the few places in the USA which has seen continuous use of steam locomotives.
