WHAT IS DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE? ⠀⠀

Here's a no-nonsense explanation of one of the most common causes of pain in the neck and low back. No doctor-speak that leaves more questions than answers. 😕⠀⠀

Degenerative Disc Disease is a normal process of aging, but can also be from repetitive stress and injury on the spine. Think wear and tear on the spinal discs.⠀⠀

The spinal discs are soft, shock absorbing cushions ↕️ of the spine that fit between the vertebrae, the blocks that make up the spine.⠀⠀

During the aging process, the discs start to lose water content 💧 and become less flexible. With the disc weakening over time, they can start to bulge and pinch onto nearby nerves, causing shooting pains.

As degeneration progresses, the disc may also begin to thin, which lessens the shock-absorbing effect of the disc. This thinning puts more stress on the vertebrae, which will lead to the formation of bone spurs, called osteophytes. ⠀⠀

If it gets severe enough, the bone spurs may grow large enough to make contact with a nerve or the spinal cord. This is where a pinched nerve comes in, causing sharp and shooting pains. ⚡⚡⠀⠀

Also, numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness can be experienced over the affected area.
⠀⠀
Hope this helps explain it in a more understandable way!
