The UNESCO World Heritage site of Kronborg Castle guards a narrow sound between Denmark and Sweden, and sits about an hour to the north of Copenhagen. It was built when the Danish crown controlled southern Sweden, and was intended to control and tax ships moving in and out of the busy Baltic Sea. It made the crown very wealthy, and allowed them to embellish the castle into a beautiful Renaissance palace. Although it later fell into disuse, it's still famous as the likely setting of Shakespeare's greatest play, Hamlet.
