Recently been put on an action plan on placement, or worried about how to achieve a positive outcome from one? From both personal experience, and experience working with students, getting an action plan, or being failed on placement (or 'referred' as we like to call it) at midpoint and/or final is soul-crushing. But let's look at it from a new angle.
Get as much feedback from the very start of your placement as you can (I made a whole video on how to get feedback from placements)
- This provides all-important benchmarking for yourself, as well as your assessors and supervisors to see what level you are currently working at, and then where you are heading.
- Also get verbal updates on your progress from staff and other students on shift - start up a little routine of one good thing and one thing to improve on!
If you find yourself on an action plan; you must engage in the process
- By engaging, this helps you to gain clarity on the exact issues staff feel you need to develop
- It also demonstrates immense levels of professionalism and integrity
All an action plan is, is a plan of action to achieve objectives in certain areas of practice. They are a script for you to work through to achieve the area highlighted for development. A good action plan will be helpful and give criteria for success.
