Sea Gooseberry (Pleurobrachia bachei) - close up!

The ctenophores or comb jellies have cilia fused into comb plates or ctenes that are found in rows along their bodies. They are the largest animals to use cilia for locomotion. This species isn't bioluminescent like other ctenophores - the rainbow of light is created as light refracts through the comb plates. This one has a pair of parasitic hyperiid amphipods.
