பதினெண் புராணங்களும் வடமொழியில் இருப்பவை. இவற்றுள், ஸ்கந்த புராணத்தின் சங்கர சங்கிதையில் சிவரகசிய கண்டத்தில் வரும் முதல் ஆறுகாண்டங்களின் தமிழ் மொழிபெயர்ப்பே கந்த புராணம்.
ஸ்கந்த புராணம் சிவபுராணங்கள் பத்தில் ஒன்றாகும். இது நூறாயிரம் சுலோகங்களால் ஆனது. அது ஆறு சங்கிதைகளைக் கொண்டது. இதில் சங்கர சங்கிதையும் ஒன்றாகும். சங்கர சங்கிதையில் உள்ள பல கண்டங்களில் சிவரகசிய கண்டமும் ஒன்றாகும். இக்கண்டத்தில் ஏழு காண்டங்கள் காணப்படுகின்றன. இவற்றில் உபதேச காண்டம் தவிர ஏனைய ஆறு காண்டங்களதும் தமிழ்த் தொகுப்பே கந்தபுராணமாகும்.[
உற்பத்தி காண்டம், அசுர காண்டம், மகேந்திர காண்டம், யுத்த காண்டம், தேவ காண்டம், தட்ச காண்டம் என்று ஆறு காண்டங்களை உடையது. இது 91 படலங்களையும், 10345 பாடல்களையும் உடைய இது முருகப்பெருமானின் வரலாற்றை முறையாகவும் முழுமையாகவும் கூறுகிறது.
