The suction end pressure is kept lower than atmospheric pressure. The boiling point of water depends on pressure i.e. with reduction in pressure, the boiling point also reduces. The pressure at which water will start boiling at particular temperature is called as saturation pressure. In case the pressure at suction end falls below the saturation pressure of the temperature of water then , the water will start boiling and cavitation will commence. NPSH is a concept which is required to reduce the cavitation problem of the pump.
