The British Embassy in Budapest have created The Labyrinth of #BUREUCRATIA to show how unnecessary EU regulations impose burdens on SMEs and how excessive bureaucracy affects the life of ordinary businesses.

There’s no translation in Hungarian for ‘red tape’. Rather, Hungarians refer to “a labyrinth of bureaucracy”. With that in mind, we decided to build a physical labyrinth, representing the imaginary city of BUREUCRATIA, where excessive bureaucracy makes life difficult for SMEs. Scenes from everyday life, simple examples and graphic illustrations helped visitors understand why Better Regulation matters for businesses as they navigated the labyrinth.

The labyrinth was launched on 6 November 2014, the day of the publication of the Taskforce’s One year on report. British Ambassador to Hungary, Jonathan Knott and Hungarian State Secretary for Economic Regulation, Bela Glattfelder opened the labyrinth providing their own examples of frustration with inefficient EU regulation to a crowd of journalists, business people, government officials and curious onlookers.

The project aims to fast-track awareness of the UK’s Better Regulation agenda amongst decision makers, opinion shapers, stakeholders and those who apply EU rules in their day-to-day lives. The launch was just the beginning of a wider network series. BUREUCRATIA will travel across Central Europe over the next year and will be exhibited in other capitals.
