8. Ichthyosaurs
Ichthyosaurs were a pretty unique ancient species in regards to ocean dwellers. This was a species that not only survived a long period of time before going extinct, but also evolved during that time to become something even more unique. According to fossil records, they date back to about 250 million years ago.

7. Plesiosaurs
The Plesiosaurs actually had two main species during the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods of history (the timeframes where they existed). Or to be even more specific, they had two kinds of body types. One such build had a long neck, but a short head. This made them eat smaller fish, and they weren't the most aggressive of creatures.

6. Dunkleosteus
Apex Predators work hard for their title, and one such category is its raw power. The Dunkleosteus, it was a sea monster that had one of the more powerful bites in the history of the world. That includes being stronger than dinosaurs and any modern animal today.

5. Dakosaurus
The Dakosaurus live in the late Jurassic and early Cretaceous period of the ancient world. Their fossilized bones actually weren't found until in the 1800's in Germany, and many are still trying to find out all there is to know about the species. However, based on the teeth and skulls that have been found, there is no doubt that the Dakosaurus was a major threat in the oceans.

4. Mosasaur
The Mosasaur was very likely one of the biggest creatures in the ancient oceans during its time of life. As its lengths was able to get up to 56 feet at times. Though it is speculation in part, there is a 43-foot-skeleton of a Mosasaur that is on display at the Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre in Morden, Manitoba.

3. Liopleurodon
There's little to no doubt that the Liopleurodon was a big creature in the water when it lived during the middle of the Jurassic period. However, there is a debate between scientists is whether this massive creature was only 20 feet, or actually 50 feet. But, one thing that all the scientists are able to agree on is that the Liopleurodon had a terrifying set of teeth.

2. Livyatan Melvillei
If you were to look at the animals that live in our oceans today, one species that you would point out as being one of the least aggressive in the oceans is that of the whales. Whales are known to be very gentle and kind animals, but that wasn't always the case though, and in the ancient waters of the world, there was one whale that was infamous for being very aggressive, and deadly.

1. Megalodon
Sharks are one of the most feared creatures in the world. We all have seen the stories about Great Whites, Tiger Sharks, Hammerhead Sharks, Bull Sharks, and more, which in some cases can get up to 20 feet long. But none of them compare to the ancient terror that was the Megalodon, an aggressive ancient shark species so powerful and deadly that it was arguably the most dominant Apex Predator of the ancient oceans.
