The onset of the disease typically starts with flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, and stiff neck. Within hours, these symptoms can progress to more severe signs, including nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, confusion, and a distinctive rash that doesn't fade under pressure. Clinically, meningococcal disease can manifest as meningitis (infection of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord) or septicemia (bloodstream infection). Meningitis symptoms include severe headache, high fever, neck stiffness, and sensitivity to light. Septicemia symptoms include fever, fatigue, cold hands and feet, muscle and joint pain, rapid breathing, and a purplish rash. Early recognition and prompt treatment with antibiotics are crucial to reduce the risk of severe complications or death.
