Rugby legend Martin Offiah has welcomed the Rugby Football Union’s (RFU) decision to review the song Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, but said he does not believe it should be banned.

The Rugby Football Union is launching a review into the anthem because of its links to slavery.

Speaking with talkRADIO’s Julia Hartley-Brewer, Mr Offiah said: “I think education or informing ourselves about what it is that we are singing or saying is never going to be a bad thing.

“There’s no black payer who’s been on the pitch when this song has been sung who thinks that this song should be banned, but they’re still applauding the RFU for taking a breath and saying we are reviewing this, maybe there’s other things that we need to review.”

The anthem became linked with the sport after it was first sung in Martin Offiah's honour at Twickenham in 1987 because of his nickname “Chariots”.
