The garden is in Peasedown St John, Somerset (just outside of Bath) 💚 How long have you had the tropical gardening bug? My earliest memory is from visiting the Lost Gardens of Heligan with my dad, when I was around maybe 9 or 10 years old. I can remember being in awe of all of the giant palms and tree ferns, and how otherworldly they were, and I think that sparked my drive to do something similar now; to create a space that you won't find just anywhere, and one that feels like it transports you somewhere else... somewhere more exotic. I also remember coming across the book on Heligan, written by Tim Smit, in a local charity shop, at the age of around 15, and from there my gardening library just snowballed. These were the days before the internet was readily available, and certainly not something that I had access to, and so book collecting was the best way to absorb as much as possible (it's amazing how much the guidance has changed for many of the plants that we grow now, in an exotic style garden, and their perceived hardiness!). 💚How long have you been growing that garden? I moved into this house about 4 years ago, though didn't really touch the garden until the following year. The central bed and part of the long bed that runs along the East length of the garden were the first to be planted up in 2018, and the plants from that summer have really established now. The central bed houses a Musa basjoo that towers way above me, and the Euphorbia x pasteurii has surpassed all expectation having stretched out to around 2-3 metres in all directions. The arid beds and jungle planting around the circle patio were only started last year around March time and was just plain lawn and an old greenhouse prior, so I'm really pleased with how well this has established in such a short space of time! Quite a few of the larger specimen plants have been bought as 'dig your own' type bargains, and most of the hard landscaping materials such as the various rock types and timber, have been reclaimed either free of charge or at very little cost, so this has been achieved on a real shoestring budget. 💚 Whats the coldest temperature that you have had in your garden? I think the winter just gone has been the coldest during my short spell in this garden, and although not particularly cold in terms of plummeting temperatures, we had some really long cold spells that hit quite a few of the plants hard, although most have bounced back thankfully. 💚 Any favourite plants? This could be a long list, although I'll do my best to keep it limited 😂 Banana group of plants - It's hard to beat bananas for that exotic jungle leaf look, and I grow quite a few types, my current favourite being Musa bordelon, as it's not too fussy over winter, and the red wine coloured markings atop and on the underside of the leaf are really striking! Apparently quite cold hardy too, though I won't test it outside until I can safely separate a pup. I'm also a huge fan of Agaves. I find their form almost like living art! Agave ovatifolia, parryi var. truncata, and sharkskin are current favourites, though the order is quite fluid, and changes often 😅 I llove my Butias too, and wouldn't be without my Brahea armata... I could go on and on, if given time to think about it... (but I'll spare you!) 💚Any plants that you've had difficulty growing in your garden? I have a real problem with gastropods in my garden. Hostas, Cannas and Coleus are under constant attack, and I even had to resort to digging up a few of my hostas this year, as they looked awful! 💚Whats a dream plant that you'd like to add to your garden? Another tough question, but I think if I had to chose one, it would be Juania australis - this has to be the most exotic looking palm that could be feasibly grown in our climate, though they are as rare as rocking horse sh*t, so my chances of ever owning one are pretty slim... seeds could be an option though. 💚 Any garden projects on the horizon? We have a large area of lawn, which is currently off limits until the kids get older... My current task is to chip away at the missus' resolve in an attempt to bring this date forwards, as it is a massive space with so much potential!
