This was the first time that I've ever attempted to grow a Banana plant of any kind. Even though they are commonly referred to as trees, they are actually herbaceous, so they are plants. I was intrigued by the possibility of growing a hardy banana that could survive the winter outside in our zone 6b garden. Musa Basjoo cold hardy banana trees are supposed to be able to survive winters as far north as zone 5.
I started out with a plant that was about 5 inches or so tall. Even though it started out fairly slowly, it still ended up getting about 10 feet tall before our first freeze slowed it down.
In this video I show the progress from the time I planted it outside, until I cut it down and got it ready for winter.
