Officials provided an update on Saturday regarding the severe flooding that has gripped the Canadian province of Nova Scotia.

Premier Tim Houston said that three months worth of rain fell in less than 24 hours.

"It came fast, and it came furious. And it's left a mark in many ways," he said.

Houston told media two children are currently unaccounted for, following an incident involving a submersed vehicle. The other three passengers in the vehicle escaped.

He said a state of emergency was invoked on Friday, so the province has additional and faster access to resources. Plus, the provincial co-ordination centre was activated on Friday.

About 150 residents, at this time, have been displaced from their homes as flash flooding caused by heavy rain has resulted in a significant amount of damage in the Halifax area.

In an earlier update from the Halifax Regional Municipality on Saturday, residents were told to avoid driving as several roads were washed out and as cars abandoned on streets and highways were creating dangerous driving conditions.
