Sidney Poitier, barrier-breaking Hollywood actor, has died at the age of 94 in the Bahamas. Poitier, who became the first Black actor to win the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1963 for his performance in “Lilies of the Field,” became known for rejecting film roles that portrayed racist stereotypes. He often portrayed intelligent Black men during the 1960s when Black people were often not being represented as such, in films like “A Patch of Blue,” and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.”
