Many seafarers are aware of the risks associated with the day to day loading and unloading of bulk cargoes. But it’s not always obvious that the cargoes themselves and their carriage can also be a serious hazard. Some bulk carriers have loaded cargoes which have later liquefied, leading to instability and capsize. Other vessels have loaded cargoes which have suffered a violent chemical reaction, resulting in a catastrophic explosion.

Dealing with the hazard once it has become a real hazard, rather than a potential one, is never easy. Prevention is always better than cure. As a guide to all personnel involved in the shipment of bulk cargoes, the mandatory International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargo (IMSBC) Code details how to handle some 150 different types of commodity – from assessing acceptability, through to handling, carriage and discharge.

This programme provides an introduction to the IMSBC Code and the information it contains. It also supplements the code by proposing a straightforward and logical process of best practice actions that are applicable to the handling of all solid bulk cargoes. Subsequent programmes in this series look in greater depth at specific groups of cargoes that present particularly severe hazards.
