Paper vine: how to weave anything from newspaper tubes !
Large interior baskets and fruit bowls, bulky chests, small boxes, bread boxes, dolls, decorations and furniture decor - you will be surprised, but all this and much more can be made from paper, or rather, from paper tubes. People who are addicted to the modern version of basket weaving use these straws instead of wicker and rattan - and claim that paper gives you much more options than traditional materials.
What is a paper vine and what can be made from it ?
Paper vine is a relatively new direction in needlework, which consists in weaving paper tubes using technologies characteristic of traditional vine weaving.
Masters twist the tubes with their own hands - this can be done easily and quickly. Paper is used as raw material. Very often, for example, newspapers - that is why the “paper vine” is often also called “weaving from newspaper tubes”. Also - magazines and other waste paper: among other things, this type of needlework allows you to get rid of unnecessary press and books. The most advanced prefer ordinary office sheets, which are sold in large packs. Tubes for weaving from such printer paper are even and uniform, which has a positive effect on the quality of finished products.
Products made from paper vines are very different. Passionate about this fast-growing type of needlework, people say that they use techniques characteristic of long-known crafts in their work: traditional wicker weaving, more subtle and intricate rattan weaving, even macrame and knitting
It's all about the material. Thanks to the raw material itself, tight twisting and special processing, paper straws are thin, flexible and durable at the same time. Therefore, quite large items can be made from them, such as laundry baskets or storage boxes, and very small things like bracelets or brooches.
How the finished thing will look depends only on the imagination and skills of the master. For example, paper tubes can be used to weave baskets in a traditional “rustic” style, which are good for giving, or you can make quite modern-looking organizers and other functional decor that can decorate the interior of a city apartment.
Who first came up with this unusual needlework technique is not known for certain. It is believed that she came from Korea, China and Japan. These countries are known for their virtuosity in various paper-working techniques, from origami to paper-mashe. One way or another, the idea of using paper straws instead of vines, thanks to the Internet, has become popular all over the world today. The fact that people are interested in this type of needlework is evidenced by at least the fact that you can already buy ready-made tubes in creative stores so as not to twist them yourself.
Surprisingly, at first glance, products made from paper tubes are quite difficult to distinguish from things woven from the same familiar willow vine. Moreover, unlike rods, paper weaving looks even more accurate and of high quality, because perfectly smooth tubes do not have knots and natural irregularities. In addition, the technique of this needlework is thought out in such a way that when weaving, one tube is imperceptibly and securely attached to another, forming a paper vine of any length: the twigs cannot be glued like that. And the ends of a natural vine cannot be hidden as cleverly and imperceptibly as it can be done with a paper vine.
Another plus of tube products is their lightness. The same laundry baskets or chests woven from twigs would weigh much more than those made from twisted paper. But in strength, of course, a real vine will outperform a paper one. Although at the end of the work, the product woven from paper is coated with a special varnish, so that it becomes waterproof and holds its shape better, it will not withstand too much stress. Therefore, for example, wicker furniture is not made from tubes. But with their help, you can decorate a wooden chair, armchair or table, giving the objects a characteristic “wicker” look.
