Home Studio basics - An intro to preamps and channel strips. I take a look at the Presonus Studio Channel and Art Voice Channel. You won't find a pro recording studio that doesn't run it's microphones through a high end preamp so it's good to consider one. If you are only recording a single instrument with a single microphone at a time then you can get away with just one but once you start putting mics around the room and micing from different angles then you will start to build up a whole armada of preamps and channel strips.
If you have a home studio and you have a microphone then hopefully this video will help you out
This video focuses on a couple of introductory level preamps and channel strips which I would highly recommend as your first purchase.
Something else to consider is that a pre amp or channel strip is not just for vocals, any instrument can be run through it. I have been in a professional recording studio which ran every single instrument and vocal part through a channel strip - the channel strip was a Manley VoxBox
