Varanasi, being the oldest city of India, with miles of Ghats or steps for religious bathing, an array of shrines and temples. The city has around 84 ghats popular for bathing and Puja ceremony. But Manikarnika ghat is exclusively used for cremation rites.
Manikarnika Ghat, situated in Varanasi, India, is one of the oldest and holiest cremation grounds, also referred to as the burning ghat of the city. It is believed that if a person is cremated here, he immediately attains moksha (salvation). Hundreds of elderly people across the whole country spend their last days absorbing the charisma of the ghat making death painless. As hundreds of bodies are consigned to the flames every day. The land is considered to be the most sacred for cremation by the Hindus. The corpse is doused in the Ganges prior to cremation. Huge piles of firewood are stacked along the top of the ghat. More than 100 bodies are cremated here every day, where a pyre burns 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Manikarnika is a Sanskrit word. Mani meaning Beads and Karnika meaning Ear Ornament. It is bound on both sides by the Scindia Ghat and Dashashwamedh Ghat. There are several myths behind the name of this ghat.
One myth - It is believed that Sati Devi's Ear Rings (Manikarna) fell here when Lord Shiva carrying the corpse of Sati Devi
Another myth - When Lord Shiva took bath, a Mani (jewel) of his earring fell into the kund,
another myth - When lord Shiva was dancing angrily, the ear jewel fell down on earth and Manikarnika Ghat formed
