It was a cold, early morning on the first day of the Chinese New Year holiday when the P&O liner Canberra steamed slowly into Hong Kong harbour for the final time. The usually bustling harbour was quiet save for the occasional ferry. With the absence of smog the Lantau hills stood out in magnificent sharp relief. Chinese New Year was the only time when the city shut down and maintained a Stornoway Sabbath stillness. Ocean Terminal was deserted – no customary band or lion dance to welcome the passengers – only a handful of dedicated fans waiting to embark on the ship.

Eight months later on the 31st October 1997 the Canberra was beached at Gadani Pakistan for scrapping.
