Knock Nevis
The World's Biggest Ship

Knock Nevis was the longest ship ever built and possessed the greatest deadweight tonnage ever recorded.
The vessel, built in Japan in 1979, was also known as Seawise Giant, Happy Giant, Jahre Viking, and Mont.
It was 458.45 m (1,504.10 ft) long and had a fully loaded displacement of 657,019 tonnes (646,642 long tons).
With a laden draft of 24.6 m (81 ft), it was incapable of navigating the English Channel, the Suez Canal or the Panama Canal.
In the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war, the Seawise Giant was attacked by the Iraqi air-force, sunk whilst at anchor and declared a write-off.
In 2004 it was renamed Knock Nevis and converted into a permanently moored storage tanker (FSO) in the Maersk Oil operated Al Shaheen oil field offshore Qatar.
At her full speed of 16.5 knots (30.6 km/h) she had a two-mile turning circle and took 5½ miles (9 km) to come to a stop.
The FSO uses a Riser Mooring system which enables loading of the crude oil.
Knock Nevis had a storage capacity of 4.2 million barrels.
On 9 October 2009 Knock Nevis departed Al Shaheen.
The vessel was sold to Indian ship breakers and renamed Mont for its final journey in December 2009. It was beached for scrapping in Alang, Gujarat on 22 December.
The rudder weighed 230 tonnes and the propeller 50 tonnes however its 36 tonne anchor was saved and sent to the Hong Kong Maritime Museum for exhibition.
