This video is about RIBOSOME and all you need to know about it. Ribosomes are ribonucleoproteins (made up of RNA & Protein). They do not contain any membrane and are made up of two unequal subunit. One is large subunit and another one is small subunit. both subunits gets synthesized into the nucleoli.
There are two types of ribosome one is organellar ( found attached with the outer membrane of endoplasmic reticulum) and another one is cytoplasmic ribosome ( found freely flowting in the cytoplasm). Main function of ribosome is to synthesise of protein thatswhy these are also called as protein engine of the cell. because protein is the main component required for the cell survival.
Prokaryotes and eukaryotes both have ribosome. prokaryotes have 70S and Eukaryotes have 80S.
other than that mitochondria also have 55S ribosome, chloroplast have 70S and archaebacteria also have 70 S ribosome. S is sedimentation coefficient or Svedberg unit.
Protein synthesis is the main function of ribosome. For this ribosome binds to m-RNA and translate its codon in Amino acid chain. Mg concentration is very important for the assembly of ribosome to the protein.
erythromycin, chloramphenicol, clindamycin, lincomycin (these are the antibiotics) inhibits the large subunit of ribosome whereas tetracycline, streptomycin, gentamicin, kanamycin (antibiotics) are the inhibitor of small subunit.
these type of basic questions can be asked in any competitive exams so you need to remember all these points. #BaaYo
