Imagine a sea of slowly moving dunes framed by a vast horizon, the largest reaching a height of 250 meters. This landscape, which looks like the set of a futuristic movie, is actually a typical view from the window in a country like Saudi Arabia, since most of the country is occupied by deserts. The climate is therefore mostly arid. It is notable for its very high summer daytime temperatures of up to 56℃, with zero rainfall during those months, and sandstorms are quite frequent. Yet there are 16 million citizens and some 9 million migrant workers in a country where less than 2% of the land is arable. Where do they get their food? Do they buy everything with petrodollars? Surprisingly, the Saudis successfully grow many fruits and vegetables in the arid desert, and are even a major food exporter.
