2023 BMW XM review: Powerful twin-turbo V8 goes plug-in hybrid in new Porsche Cayenne PHEV rival!

The 2023 BMW XM is a divisive new model from the German brand's famed high-performance outfit. In fact, the large SUV is only the second standalone model from BMW M in its history, following in the tyre tracks of the celebrated M1 coupe.

Why divisive, though? Well, just look at the XM. Safe to say it's not everyone's cup of tea, with its split headlights, large grille, sloping roofline and stacked quad exhaust tailpipes. But as they say, styling is subjective, so what does the Porsche Cayenne rival really have to offer?

Well, a mighty 4.4-litre twin-turbo petrol V8 engine forms part of a plug-in hybrid powertrain that prioritises performance over efficiency. But is it any good? In this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Dave Morley puts the XM through its paces to find out.
