The Mata Nacional dos Medos is a wooded space located in the parish of Charneca de Caparica, in the Municipality of Almada, with approximately 340 hectares in area. The place was classified as a natural (botanical) reserve in 1971. Its name derives from the name given to the piles of sand, typically formed by the action of the wind, next to the sea ("medos" or "medões"). In fact, due to the movement of sand from the existing dunes to the West, King João V of Portugal ordered the planting of this forest in the 18th century, to prevent them from invading agricultural land located to the east. Due to having been planted by the king, this area was still known as Pinhal do Rei.
