The tiny Persian Gulf emirate
The tiny Persian Gulf emirate of Dubai has long sought to position itself as an international finance and trading center within today's global economy. It built an ultra-modern image with luxury hotels and resorts and high profile sporting events. But the global economic crisis has hit hard. The Swiss investment bank, UBS, predicts a population decline of 8 percent this year. As Mandy Clark reports from Dubai, foreigners make up 90 per cent of the emirate's population. The downturn has already sent some foreign workers packing. But for unemployed workers from South Asia, that is sometimes not an option.
