Lausanne, Switzerland, May 31, 2014 -- Serbia, who finished ninth at the London Olympics and eighth in last year's FIVB World League, completed a stunning opening weekend in this year's World League by doing the double over Olympic champions Russia in Pool B. After beating the Russians 3-2 on Friday, Serbia went one better on Saturday, winning the second match in the Serbian city of Nis 3-1 (21-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-20) in front of more than 6,000 fans. Nemanja Petric scored an impressive 28 points for the Serbs, while Denis Biriukov was Russia's top scorer with 16 points. "This victory means a lot to us for the upcoming matches in the World League because it is not common to beat Russia twice in one weekend," said Serbia's Marko Podrascanin. Meanwhile, Argentina defeated Germany for the first time in the World League in nine attempts. Their 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-21) victory in front of a noisy home crowd in Salta was also their first in this year's World League, having dropped their first two games against France. "I want to underline the work of our captain Javier Filardi, as his experience is very important in a team made of youngsters," Argentina coach Julio Velasco said. "We played very well. We corrected many things and were able to play as a team, with good coordination in both blocking and defence, which allowed us to regain our confidence." In Montpellier, hosts France picked up their third straight World League victory this year, overcoming Japan 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-21) in Pool D. In other matches on Saturday, the Netherlands beat Korea 3-0 (25-19, 28-26, 25-23), Portugal overcame the Czech Republic 3-1 (25-23, 19-25, 25-18, 25-20) and Canada defeated Finland 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-20).
