A 32 mile journey between
A 32 mile journey between junctions 3 and 12 on the M4 motorway which leads out from the west of London down to the far side of Reading, Berkshire. This stretch of motorway has been partially upgraded into a new 'Smart' motorway,. This entails the replacement of the hard shoulder with a running lane. The upgrade work started back in 2018 and is due to complete during 2022 at a cost of £848 million.
A new radar Stopped Vehicle Detection system identifies a stopped vehicle, typically within 20 seconds, and provides an alert to the authorities. The system can automatically display a ‘report of obstruction’ message to warn drivers of a stopped vehicle ahead.
When the entire upgrade project between junction 3 and 12 is finally completed, there will be places to stop in an emergency approximately every 1.3 miles.
