Gabe an autistic and Nonspeaking Teen communicates thru Spelling and Typing! #autism #nonverbal #aac

I got a call from Gabe’s teacher today letting me know he was having “an emotional moment.” I could hear his in the background and he did sound upset, maybe uncomfortable due to his nose bleeding lately. It’s not your average nose bleed. They are severe and he hates the feeling. I was picking him up early anyway bc he was meeting with Ingrid. When I got him from school I could see he had a rough day and wondered if I should bring him home instead of to his spelling session. I decided to take him anyway. I’m so glad I did!
Gabe eagerly entered the building, the elevator, hit the restroom, and finally got to Ingrid’s office. He could not get inside fast enough!
He has been using his AAC device to type for the last several sessions and this time he did it so much faster than usual. He was so focused and he was talking while he worked on on getting his finger to press the letters he wanted. He was also looking at me throughout to make sure I was listening to him. It showed me this message was meant for me and Caroline. I couldn’t wait to share this with her!
He typed: Give fine credit to my family that give me every great chance to be myself.

I am so proud of him for his hard work and I have always realized how much Gabe appreciates what we give him. The experiences he gets to have. The love he receives. The freedom to be himself! I just wish Caroline could have been there to see this.
