How to volunteer abroad for free

During our past years of travel, we've done a lot of volunteering work: as teachers in Senegal, Mexico and Turkey, caring for animals in New Zealand, Australia, England and Greece, working with small communities in Morocco, landscaping in Ireland,... and the list goes on. We never had to pay any money to work as volunteers even though there are many website and organizations that would charge you a lot of money for this type of work! So how did we find all these volunteering jobs around the world for free?
