In this episode, I go over some basic climbing techniques used with a RESCUE EIGHT (8) DESCENDER. I show how to attach the rope to the device using a bight of rope and I demonstrate how to ascend/take in slack and how to descend. Next, I go over proper technique for locking off your device using the rope to go around the "ears" and through the opening. Finally, I explain how someone can create a "third hand," an emergency brake, using a prusik loop on the rope, below the Figure Eight. Once installed, this prusik hitch will prevent you from descending on the rope more than you intend to by grabbing the rope and halting the descent if you take your hands off of the hitch (perhaps maybe a rock dropped and hit your head, making you unconscious).
