A short segment from a practise session I recorded, working on my improvised legato technique.
Not massively musical yet, just trying to thread my way through these hard John Coltrane chord changes.
In reality this is about 20 bpm too fast for me as I'm losing control and not resolving everything. Nevertheless, it's fun when it's falling apart, and more importantly I want to honestly show both what I can do, and also the things I can't do, but working on.
I actually received my first guitar lesson in over a decade last week from the modern legato master Tom Quayle. Tom's command of the fretboard through chord changes is astonishing and hugely inspiring.
Another source of inspiration for this particular set of changes is that every time I load up the iReal Pro app this damned tune is the default, staring me in the face and taunting me with its ridiculousness!
So no excuses. I'll get on top of it eventually.
I would love to hear from anyone else currenlty learning to do this. How's it going for you, what are you working on?
