S04E55 In this episode, I drag our old #inflatableboat out of storage to find that the transom had completely rotted away! My intention simply was only to clean it up to make space and sell it, but selling in the condition I had found it would not have been safe for the new owner but the #SIB itself was just in too good of a condition to throw away and so I thought I would have a go at a little DIY transom replacement. With a transom in the state it was, a simple repair was not possible, although I did start that process - and so, I was faced with the decision - and that was to scrap it or replace the transom. Having pulled the old transom out, it was clear that it had rotten through and was completely unusable. Sourcing a piece of 'B' Grade, 25mm thick, #marine #plywood (It was going to be painted and so surface marks didn't matter) wasn't too difficult but was expensive at £60. Luckily, I had a supply of #Arc #epoxy from a previous project that didn't get finished and so was technically a freebie, paint was £17 (Half a tin) and the glue amounted to £37 - and with much swearing, the total replacement came to £114 - or about $125. This is money that will never be recovered as a brand new inflatable similar to this - a Compass 230, would cost around £400 in the UK, however, passing on a good, water-worthy dinghy and giving this SIB a new lease of life was a far better decision! Oh, and I learnt a lot along the way - namely - PVC glue doesn't like marine paint and that if the parts you aren't bonding are still tacky, they will grab onto another tacky surface instantly with the force of superglue - yes I had to re-apply soooo much glue and try again, but thought it better not to include all of the very bad language in the video. Is it worth you having a go ? I can only speak from personal experience, having watched how to do this from other YouTube VLOGs, of which there are very few, and so, now, here is my attempt! The Inflatable boat has since been on the water with a 6hp outboard and doesn't leak at all, so I must have done something right! PS - I did refit the grab plate the correct way up!!!! As always thank you for watching and we ask if you would kindly consider liking the video and subscribing to our channel - each like and subscription really counts and we have a lot of fun producing this content for you.
