The Chaparral Prince by O. Henry -- Short Story Film -- 1982

A "Cinderella" story set in the West that mixes O. Henry's masterful use of sentiment and irony in a most unusual way. Frail Lena, hired out by her father  to a wicked innkeeper, tries to escape her plight by reading fairy tales about handsome prices who rescue young maidens. When he boss throws her favorite book in the fire, she plans to run away. Her letter home is intercepted by robbers, and their leader becomes the unlikely prince of Lena's dreams, when, touched by her story, he sweeps into the inn and rescues her.
