This video shows you how to pick the best LED lights for your DIY projects! LEDs can make a world of difference in your projects. The right light can change something boring to something amazing. LEDs, which stand for Light Emitting Diodes, are small, energy-efficient devices that emit light when an electrical current passes through them. These tiny powerhouses come in various shapes and sizes, making them perfect for all kinds of craft projects. And, most importantly for us, LEDs provide light without creating heat that might become a fire hazard – incandescent lights, like old fashioned Christmas bulbs, and real candle flames are a huge no-no when it comes to our projects. So we use LEDs, which we can do safely!

LED tealights: These little gems, which you can get for under a dollar each, mimic the soft, flickering glow of real candles without the fire hazard. They're great for decorating your handmade lanterns and other small things. They can be steady lights or flickering lights, and are usually warm white, but sometimes they are cool white, too. Sometimes they have remote controls, but more often they do not. The best thing about LED tealights is that you can place them wherever you need them without worrying about strings or cords. And they are very small, so they fit into small lanterns and behind things for illumination. And, if they are visible, they look nice because they just look like little candles. The biggest downside to LED tealights is that they are just a single LED in most cases, and that means they really aren’t very bright. They’ll look great when the room is dark, but otherwise they may not be that noticeable.

LED fairy lights: These delicate and enchanting lights are perfect for adding a touch of magic to your crafts. LED fairy lights are inexpensive – you can get them for under a dollar each in a bulk pack. Fairy lights come in various lengths and colors, allowing you to create whimsical and dreamy atmospheres. These are not very expensive, but are brighter than tea lights. And they are almost always battery operated, which is appropriate, as they are used for small things. They are easy to get and use. I think they work best for small and contained projects, like our star ornament. The things to watch out for when choosing fairy lights are their length and their color (cool white vs warm white).

LED spotlights. These battery-operated LED spotlights have several LEDs, about 10, concentrated in a puck shape. They are usually waterproof and used for things like lighting pumpkins, but I’ve found them really useful for many of my DIY projects. These spotlights are about $5 and up, but they are also a step up from fairy lights because they are brighter AND you can control the color – you’re not just limited to warm or cool light, but rather you can gets lot of lights from them. This is really useful because you can then change the colors to match your project or mood. You can even adjust the brightness with the remote control.

LED Night Lights. These look a little like the LED spotlights I showed you earlier, but they concentrate their LED light in a slit along the top so you can insert something into it and illuminate it really nicely. You can still use a nightlight to light up other things – I used these when I was first lighting up my paper village, but they are best for edge lighting on acrylics. These night lights are typically a bit more expensive, starting around $6 for a bulk pack.

LED Light Strips: Now, who doesn't love LED light strips? Whether you opt for battery packs or plug-in versions, these flexible strips can illuminate your crafting world in endless ways. Use them to highlight artwork, create vibrant signage, or even enhance your home decor. The lowest I’ve found these is about $10 per 10-foot strip. They do come much longer, and sometimes with colors, too.

App-Controlled LED Lights: Lastly, let's talk about the future of LED lights – app-controlled LEDs like the popular "Twinkly" lights! With these, you can customize your lighting effects, colors, and patterns right from your smartphone. It's like having a light show at your fingertips. These are so cool, in fact, that I want to show you exactly how they work to de-mystify them for you, so we’re going to set up a set of Twinkly Strings together.
