Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara looks at the worst comics he's reviewed up to this point! atopthefourthwall.com/ Originally uploaded December 29th, 2014. ORIGINAL INFO: With the end of 2014, Linkara looks back at the worst comics he’s ever reviewed for the show! RUMINATIONS: I began the 2014 episodes ruminations by talking about how bad a year it was and people seemed confused by why I would think that. Most of it was personal stuff happening behind the scenes – arguments with friends and loved ones, decisions that ended poorly, not being where I wanted to be with some stuff… but there were public things, too, that made me evaluate the crappiness. It didn’t get off to a good start with the loss of Justin (probably the worst of it all) and there was just other stuff along the way like being overly stressed out by stuff going on, learning that my friend was moving to Texas and I’d have to quickly write him out of the show, the slow descent of Blip as the revenue began tanking during times when it should have been doing well (the holidays – October through December – are the best time to be watching videos because that’s when the best-paying ads are put out by companies. It’s our sweeps), all the time and effort thrown into the 300th episode only for the returns to be pitiful, and an increase in troll activity against me because people suck. There WERE good things, of course. The AT4W Movie IndieGoGo had already begun picking up speed for the last half of December, Atopthefourthwall.com had launched and despite a few hiccups people still say they love the site while ChannelAwesome’s website launch had a bit of a rockier beginning (not helped by some promises we were told about the design still not having been implemented) but it happened and had been a recurring joke among the fandom, so getting that resolved was good. I should probably explain what took so long for CA’s website since, hey, I have a platform. Mind you, the details might be slightly inaccurate because all of this was happening secondhand and I was just hearing about it from others, so don’t take my word as gospel. The reason why ThatGuyWithTheGlasses had to change was because the name and branding was associated strictly with Doug (I would also note that that doesn’t seem to have changed despite the rebranding, but whatever) and because the website itself was a link farm. Any newcomers to the site would see just a bunch of text links under names they had no understanding of and an image scrolling through title cards of the latest videos… and it sucked. The search function sucked, the archive sucked, and sometimes clicking on links brought you to inaccurate and out of date link farms on top of the link farm you already had to navigate through. Originally, I’m pretty sure Bargo (Ma-Ti in the anniversary movies, for those unaware) was the one designing a new Channel Awesome website, but then whatever happened with him happened and that hit a brick wall. Later, as Blip was expanding prior to the buyout by Maker, they offered to design websites for many of their more popular talent. They had offered such a thing to me as part of signing an exclusive with them (the contract was garbage, in my opinion and negotiations stopped when Maker bought them out) and Chez Apocalypse’s site DID get made by them. They began working on the new CA site and it was actually just short of being ready to launch… and then the Maker buyout happened. And suddenly all work on the site just stopped dead in its tracks. Maker apparently said they were planning on continuing work when things settled, but things settled and no progress was made, so the higher-ups decided to hell with it and had to start from scratch all over. It’s why you need to be savvy in negotiation this stuff for unexpected circumstances like this, but in the end CA launched and has been tweaked since then to be slimmer and better. Still could use a bunch of improvements, but it’s been worse.
