In this video, I show the process to run a compression test on a vehicle.  This simple compression test, done with the kit I included in the link above, will tell you a lot about the wear to your pistons, valves, and even the possibility of a head gasket issue.  
This compression tester, tests the pressure created in the cylinder as the piston compresses.  If you have a leaking valve or piston rings, this pressure will be low.  It is also possible to have pressure leaking out around the head gasket.  
If you have 2 adjoining cylinders with low pressure, but all the others are fine, that's a possible indication of a leak in the head gasket between the 2 cylinders.
Other low pressures can be due to the valves not seating well, or worn piston rings.
An additional test to help determine if the piston rings are the problem is a Wet Compression Test.  I will include the link to the wet compression test below.
