Transcript for Best VPN to Reduce Gaming Lags and Get Low Ping for Fortnite, Call of Duty & More

It's not fun when you take a shot on Call of Duty only to have your game lag and you die before you can even react.

Alright. What is lag anyway? Lag is a delay, called latency, between input (when you’re smashing on your keyboard or control to cause an action) and the reaction on the game you’re playing. Try playing World of Warcraft Shadowlands battlegrounds with lag. The game will glitch out, you’ll be dotted up by a warlock and be half dead when the server responds.

Lag can happen for a lot of reasons: outdated hardware, Wi-Fi connections, server issues and your location. You can upgrade your hardware and work on issues on your end, but there’s little you can do to get closer to the game’s server.

And that’s where the best VPN to reduce gaming lag can occur.
When you reduce the distance between you and the game’s server, you’re reducing the latency in the process. If servers are overseas, the lag can make it unbearable to play some games.

Do you see where we’re going here? If your lag is primarily caused by the distance between you and the game server, a VPN makes a lot more sense than moving. It's also a lot cheaper and more practical.

What VPN do we recommend? ExpressVPN. I've tried a lot of VPNs over the years, and one thing seems consistent between all of them: speeds are impacted. Your Internet connection is always faster when not connected to a VPN. If your speeds are slow, a VPN may cause more lag. But gaming requires 3 Mbps for most consoles and less for computers – not fast at all.
When I tested ExpressVPN, speed loss was less than 10%, so it won’t cause lag. And with over 3,000 servers in 90+ countries, you can connect to a server that’s close to the game’s server to reduce your lag.

It's easy to get started with your VPN, but let’s take a step back and help you get setup. I've provided a link in the description for you to sign up and get started with lag-free gaming today.

Click the link, find the get started button and sign up. In a few minutes, you’ll be able to download an app for your preferred operating system. Apps are available for mobile operating systems, Mac and PC.

If you’re running a console, I recommend setting up your router to use the VPN so that you can reduce lag on your console. It's a little complicated to do, but ExpressVPN provides guides that you can follow to get started.

After you’ve signed up and have an account, you’ll find an activation code on your dashboard that you’ll copy and paste into your app or software. The rest is so simple. Choose a server, ideally as close to the game’s server as possible, and fire up your game.

I know that a lot of the games I play will log IP addresses and try their best to stop people from sharing accounts. For this reason, you may want to favorite or star the server that you choose so that you can log into the same server each time you want to game.

ExpressVPN even has a favorite app shortcut system that I use extensively. Add shortcuts to the games you play the most so that you can launch them from within the VPN’s app.

You also get a lot of freedom using a VPN. You can play games from other regions and get by any geoblocks that may exist, too. A few of the games that are released first in Japan, for example, can be played using a VPN. I like this option when I want to give a new game a try before any of my gamer friends can.

If you’re running Windows and don’t know where the game’s server is located, launch the game, open the command prompt on your system and type “netstat -n” to see which IP addresses your system connects to. Dig into some of these addresses and you’ll be able to find their general location. Use this information when choosing your server on ExpressVPN.
