Why paint in layers? This super quick video gives you a bit of background in layering. Layering colors over each other allows you to:
* Get greater depth of colors (until it gets muddy or murky, but even then you can get astonishing variations of grays. It's subtle, but hopefully that's the look you are going for.)
* Get shades, tints, or combo colors that you couldn't have imagined or mixed.
* Get layers of textures. Like "staccato" strokes over a light wash, or "back flows" in masses such as trees, or various mossy or lichen layers on rocks, or shadows on water.
Tips:
*Wait until the layer underneath is dry! (Otherwise you just pick up the color below and blend it in with the color you are adding.)
*Have a light hand and navigate with a bit of trepidation. If it gets muddy and that is NOT the look you want... dab it off quickly with a paper towel, cloth or tissue. Since the layer underneath was dry (see the point before this one...) you can usually fairly well remove the layer you are applying if you act quickly. (And if you aren't using a super staining or opaque paint.)
* Work in light, transparent layers -- at least until you get the hang of it.
*Consider using a wax resist as one of the layers.
*Practice makes perfect...although it's impossible to practice exactly what will happen, since each layering exercise is different. But take some time to layer various pure (from the tube) paints over each other on test sheets. It's best to use paints that are only one chemical entity in the tube. (Look on the tube or at the specs online to see the chemistry.)
