Adding salt makes water denser | Density | Physics

This is a quick and easy activity to try. Potatoes usually sink in water as they're denser than water. Add several spoonfuls of salt to the water and thoroughly dissolve it by stirring. After salt is added, the potato no longer sinks but floats! This proves that the salt makes the water denser- the solution weighs more per unit volume than plain water.
