Hello once again! Today’s episode
Hello once again! Today’s episode is the last one on Crime & Deviance for GCSE Sociology and looks at patterns of crime in society. In particular, I consider the relationship between different social groups (class, age, gender, ethnicity) and levels of crime in society. For each social group I cover some of the key concepts you need to know, as well as ways of explaining these concepts through the use of statistics and sociologists.
In this video, I cover the following things:
- Overview of patterns of crime – the big picture, patterns by social groups and overview of explanations – 01:20 – 06:16
- Social class and crime patterns – key things to know, the relevance of occupational crimes, how you can use sociological theories when explaining the link between class and patterns of crime – 06:17 – 11:45
- Age and crime patters – the age-crime curve, disproportionate levels of crime by young people, explanations around labelling, stereotyping, prejudice, discrimination, subcultures, status frustration, socialisation, social control, peer pressure and street crimes – 11:46 – 17:23
- Gender and crime patterns – disproportionate levels of crime by men, explanations around gender socialisation, gender roles, social control, female conformity, the chivalry thesis and links between gender and poverty – 17:24 – 23:21
- Ethnicity and crime patterns – disproportionate BME representation in crime statistics, explanations around racial stereotyping and labelling, media representation, scapegoating, moral panics and institutional racism – 23:22 – 29:51
- 10 key terms to know – Socialisation, Social Control, Opportunities, Status frustration, Occupational crimes, Age-crime curve, Subcultures, Patriarchy, Institutional Racism, Scapegoating – 29:52 – 33:59
- A word on exams, with an 8 mark essay question and answer walkthrough – ‘Explain how age and crime are linked.’ [8 marks] – 34:00 – 37:29
- Recap and Outro – 37:30 – 39:17
The video is aimed at GCSE Sociology Eduqas students but will also be useful to those studying different exam boards, e.g. AQA Sociology and/or those studying at a higher level, particularly if you’re newer to the subject.
