American Airlines Flight 77 Reconstruction with ATC Recording - September 11 2001

Edit: At 0:59:00 I stated that at 0920 "Several Radar Controllers Working At Dulles Terminal Radar Approach Control Observe a Primary Target Tracking Eastbound". This statement is in error. The spotting by Dulles TRACON of the primary target, marked in the reconstruction by the "no tag" call, occurred 4 minutes later, at 0924. It is unknown whether the primary target, later ID as AA77, was being watched by Radar Controllers at 0920. Thanks to Brian and John for the correction.

A quick note before the description of the video. Near the end of this reconstruction I make two statements. First, that Boston Military passed a report that American 11 was still airborne. The second, that "Giant Killer" sent the Langley F-16s east on a standard scramble heading rather than the one NEADS wanted. Both these statements are very simplified and should not be taken as 'black and white' as what they first appear. There is much more to both of them. This video is a reconstruction of the flight of AA77 on September 11 2001. Unfortunately my computer was having issues, textures wouldn't load up, so there are a couple of stop-starts which I tried to make as less noticeable as possible. This animation is synced with the FOIA ATC audio and NORAD tapes between 1218 to ~1350 UTC from the following positions;

IAD 27 Local Control West
IAD 27 North Departure
IAD 27 North High
ZDC 120 Linden Sector R05
ZDC 128 Linden Sector D05
ZDC 119 Moorefield Sector R03
ZDC 118 Moorefield Sector D03
ZID 272 Henderson Sector HNN-R
ZID 273 Henderson Sector HNN-RA
DRM1 DAT2 Channel 7 ID OP
DRM1 DAT2 Channel 2 MCC OP
DCA 105 TYSON

I'm not certain of the time the conversation between American Dispatch and the unknown women takes place, but Bill states AA77 was in contact with ZID "around 45 minutes ago", meaning the conversation may have taken place around 0930.

The NORAD tape DAT2 Channel 2 MCC OP has been cut and shortened in places in order to fit it into the video without turning it into a mess of different voices. I suggest for a fuller appreciation of the event you download the original from 911datasets.org

I did this to give a sense of realism with the last flight of American 77.

FOIA ATC audio cleaned with CyberLink WaveEditor to remove interference. Video compiled using PowerDirector 9. Animation is filmed using Fraps and Microsoft FSX.

This is not intended to be an accurate simulation.
