Connecticut for kids, States in the USA

Connecticut  is the southernmost state in the New England region. It is bordered by Rhode Island to the east, Massachusetts to the north, New York to the west,and  Long Island Sound to the south. its capital is Hartford and its most populous city is Bridgeport. The state is named for the Connecticut River which approximately bisects the state. large portions of it are often grouped with New York and New Jersey as the tri-state area .


HistoryThe first European settlers in the Connecticut area were the Dutch.n 1614, Adriaen Block explored the lands along the Connecticut River. Settlement did not occur until 1633, when a small fort was erected at the site of Hartford, then called New Hope.Both the Dutch and English settlers founded settlements in Connecticut in the early 1630s, and the land soon became a British colony.

The state took a leading role in the industrial revolution of the United States, with its many factories establishing a worldwide reputation for advanced machinery.

Yale College was founded in 1701 to educate ministers and civil leaders. It is the third-oldest institution of higher education in the United States and one of the nine Colonial Colleges chartered before the American Revolution. The educational  establishment was strongly led by Yale College, by scholars such as Noah Webster and by writers such as Mark Twain


The home of Eli Whitney and Samuel Colt, Connecticut was a leading manufacturer of guns and other arms. Samuel Colt hired Eli Whitney, who was established in the arms business, to make his guns. When World War I broke out in 1914, Connecticut's large machine industry received major contracts from British, Canadian, and French interests, as well as the U.S. forces.

Fairfield County, Connecticut's Gold Coast, was a favorite residence of many executives who worked in New York City.Connecticut offered ample inexpensive office space, high quality of life to people who did not want to live in New York City, and excellent public schools.
