(8 Oct 2020) Shelling of Stepanakert, the capital of the separatist Nagorno Karabakh Republic continued on Wednesday night.
Armenian Defence Ministry said towns of Stepanakert, Shusha, Gerdut have been hit by the artillery shells causing damage and leaving several people dead.
Residents of Stepanakert are seeking protection from bombs in the makeshift shelters organized in the basements of the apartment buildings.
Zoya, a local resident, spends nights together with her neighbours in one of such shelters.
She recalls the war of 1992 that took the lives of her two sons.
"In 1992 two of my sons died and now my grandchildren are fighting. Grandchildren of my brothers and sisters are in a war and if it is necessary, I am also ready to fight with a weapon in my hands because it is our land, land of our ancestors, " says Zoya.
In the morning after the shelling local residents checked their houses, fearing to see that it might be destroyed, and all their possessions gone.
Clashes between Azerbaijani and Armenian forces in the region since September 27 have killed hundreds in the worst escalation of hostilities since 1994 when a truce ended a war that raged for several years.
Nagorno-Karabakh lies inside Azerbaijan but has been under the control of ethnic Armenian forces backed by Armenia for more than a quarter-century.
