Here is a quick tech tip showing how to tell the difference between a King Pin and Ball Joint front suspension on your Air-cooled Volkswagen Beetle or Dune Buggy.

King Pin front ends ran until 1965 on a stock Air-Cooled VW Beetle. They use eyelet shock mounts top and bottom, and measure 7" in height. King Pins are very strong and usually do not break.

Ball Joint front suspensions were used in 1966 and later VW Beetles, all Ghias and Things. Ball Joint Beams use an eyelet bottom shock mount and a top stud mount. A stock ball-joint Beam height measures 8" tall.
